An Encouraging Word

From the Pastor’s Desk…

Early one morning recently, during my devotions, I turned to a much-beloved book that I had first read over twenty years ago.  As I opened the book, a red envelope fell from the book’s dust jacket and landed in my lap.  Apparently, at some time in the past, many years ago, I had put the card there and forgotten it.

When I looked at the envelope, I discovered that it was addressed to me personally, and, when I opened it, I found a Hallmark Card (“When you care enough to give the very best ...).  On the front was printed:  “It’s hard to believe we have a Son like you!.  On the inside:  “All those brains and looks in one family!”  I chuckled for a moment, and then I read the handwritten note, “All our love and best wishes for a Joyful Christmas and a blessed New Year, Mom and Dad Hern.”

What a wonderful and surprising blessing to begin the day – a message of love, affection, and best wishes from my mother, Kate, and my father, Lawrence, dropped unexpectedly into my life.  It brought a big smile to my face and a few tears to my eyes – tears, not of sadness, but rather of gratitude and gladness.

You see, Mom died in 1999 and Dad in 2005.  And yet, they’re still sending me love notes!  But that’s the kind of people they were.   They were never notably successful in the way that our society tends to measure success.  Dad was a country preacher who served small rural churches for 30 years, and Mom was a homemaker with a 10th grade education, but nonetheless highly self-educated.  Materially, we always had enough, but sometimes just barely enough.  We lived in modest parsonages in small towns in rural Missouri.

But in every other way we were rich, and they gave me everything I truly needed.  They gave me a safe, warm, loving home.  They imparted to me a passion for reading, for thinking, for table-talk, and for knowledge.  They taught me compassion for others and the importance of goodness.  They left me a legacy of love.  And, most importantly, they gave me a faith in Christ that has sustained me in good times and bad for almost 60 years now.

They were good people and good parents, and it feels good to remember them.

I know you have or have had people like that in your life -- parents or a siblings, relatives or friends – people who have given you what you truly needed, people who cared for you, people who left you a similar legacy of love.  Take a few moments today to remember them, and, if they are still with you, let them know that you appreciate them and love them.

And take a few moments to give thanks to God for the gracious gift of good people who have made a positive difference in your life.

Grace and Peace,

                                  kyle

Editor’s Note:  September Monthly Newsletter Correction!

Just because you read it on paper does not make it true...

Chris Mueller goes by the name Chris because his name is Chris.  He did not change it between the time I set up the newsletter cover and the Getting to Know Our Members article.  I apologize to him and Barbara (who apparently was living with a stranger for a moment there) and to all of you who said “What the heck is that woman thinking?...

Scripture Readings for September 5:

I Thessalonians 4:  9 – 12

John 6:  25 - 34

To consider while you read:

What does this passage say about God?

What does this passage say about me/the human condition?

What does this passage say about the relationship between God and me/people?
