An Encouraging Word

From the Pastor’s Desk…

From The Institutes of Religion by John Calvin, 16th Century Protestant reformer …

“Yet, in the first place, wherever you cast your eyes, there is not a spot in the universe wherein you cannot discern at least some sparks of his glory.  You cannot in one glance survey this most vast and beautiful system of the universe, its wide expanse, without being completely overwhelmed by the boundless force of its brightness.”

As we begin the New Year, let us begin with the knowledge of God’s glorious presence – there is not a spot in the universe wherein we cannot discern at least some sparks of God’s presence – and let us resolve to keep our eyes open to see God’s glory, our ears open to hear God’s voice, our hands and hearts open to receive and to share God’s gifts, and our lips always ready to declare God’s goodness and sing God’s praise.

In this manner, we can truly make the most of the treasure trove of time we have been given as we live into the glorious gift of what truly can be a blessed and beautiful New Year.

Amen?...

Kyle

Scripture Readings for January 9:

Acts  10:  34 – 43

Matthew 3:  13 - 17

To consider while you read:

What does this passage say about God?

What does this passage say about me/the human condition?

What does this passage say about the relationship between God and me/people?

Music Notes This Week:

This Sunday celebrates the Baptism of Our Lord.

At both services soloist Ben Gulley, tenor will sing Child of Promise with music by Dale Morehouse.

For the 10:45 prelude Jonathan Dawson will play his Topeka Symphony award winning selection mentioned below.  The Chancel Choir will sing This is My Beloved Son by Knut Nystedt for our introit and the anthem, Vidi aquam by Michael McCarthy.

St. John member Jonathan Dawson wins Topeka Symphony competition

The 58th annual Youth Talent Auditions, sponsored by the Topeka Symphony and Capitol Federal, were held November 20 in White Concert Hall at Washburn University. High school musicians in northeast Kansas competed for the opportunity to perform with the Topeka Symphony Orchestra and for scholarship awards. Capitol Federal will present the awards to the winners at the Topeka Symphony Orchestra concert on January 15, 2011.

This year’s auditions saw 3 winners selected: one from strings, and one each from the piano and vocal divisions. To be eligible to participate in the auditions, students must be in the 9, 10th, 11th or 12th grade and be recommended by their music teacher as being capable of performing with the Topeka Symphony Orchestra if declared a winner.

The 2011 overall winner is violinist Jonathan Dawson of Leawood.  As overall winner, he will perform the first movement of the Violin Concerto No. 4 by Mozart with the Topeka Symphony at 7:30 pm, Saturday, January 15, in White Concert Hall. Jonathan is a senior from Leawood, Kansas and attends Shawnee Mission East High School. He is the son of Christina and Martin Dawson. Jonathan began studying the violin at age three and currently studies with Benny Kim and Chiafei Lin.

If you are interested in attending Jonathan’s performance on the 15th, please contact the Dawsons for additional information.

SHORT TERM DISCIPLE STUDY:  ROMANS

In 58 A.D. Paul wrote a letter to the Romans--the distilled essence of his faith and belief. The gospel's crux, said he, is not what we can do for God but what God has done for us. That does not free us from obligations or entitle us to do as we like, but we are no longer trying to fulfill the demands of a stern, austere, condemnatory law and God.

When Martin Luther grasped this in Romans 1:17, the Protestant Reformation was born. When John Wesley grasped Romans 1:17 and said, “I felt my heart strangely warmed,” Methodism was born. When Karl Barth grasped Romans 5, he recognized Jesus the Christ as “Second Adam,” redefining human nature.

On Tuesday evening, January 11--yes, on 1/11/11--we begin an eight-week Disciples study of Romans. Episodes go from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Garth Leigh is facilitator, using fine video presentations and sixteen mountaintop chapters of the New Testament. Come join us. From that mountaintop’s panorama, you can behold the nature of grace and works and your own spiritual human nature. Please respond to Garth at gleigh@leok.com with questions, ideas, or to sign up for the group.
